Other Local Fishing
Apart from the superb carp fishing, Brittany does have some good alternative fishing, which is often overlooked. If you choose to use La Morinais as a base, there is good bream, pike & zander fishing nearby. The river Vilaine is a large slow moving river, more like a large canal than a river, which is just 1.5kms away. Weekly & daily permits can be purchased locally & are not expensive.
Almost all the carp in the Vilaine are commons & do not grow very big, a 30 pounder is an exceptional fish. The fishing is far better for the pike, zander & bream. The local French don't usually bother with the bream, they are much keener roach fishermen. If you are prepared to make the effort to do some heavy pre-baiting for three or four days, some 100lbs+ catches of 3-5lbs bream have been made by English anglers.
The local anglers don't seem to have caught on with the potential of lure fishing. There are miles of river, most easily accessible, untouched by experienced lure anglers.
